General Motors introduced the Duramax 6600 Turbo Diesel coupled to an Allison Transmission in 2000 & is
credited with introducing Common Rail Diesel Technology to the U.S. Diesel pick up truck market.

The Duramax Diesel is regarded as one of the best performing diesels in the Heavy-Duty pick up truck market.
For 2007-08 the Duramax 6600 has undergone significant power and refinement upgrades making it deliver
class-leading power and torque in the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. Several performance upgrades enables
the stock engine to deliver 365 horsepower at 3200 rpm and 660lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm.

2001-2003 LB7 Duramax Diesel (8th digit of VIN is a 1)
The LB7 was introduced in 2001. The V8 engine was a 6.6 L and it had 300 horsepower & 520 ft. Lbs of torque.  The LB7 Duramax was on
the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2001 and 2002.

2004.5-2006.5 LLY Duramax Diesel (8th digit of VIN is a 2)
The LLY is a 6.6 L turbo charged engine which was introduced in 2004. It is a 32-valve design with high-pressure common-rail direct
injection and aluminum cylinder heads. Output is 310 horsepower @3100 rpm and 590 ft. Lbs of torque @ 1800 rpm.

2006.5-2007 LBZ Duramax Diesel (8th digit of VIN is a D)  
The LBZ is nearly identical to the LLY engine. It is a 6.6 L turbo charged engine and was introduced in 2005 for the 2006 & early 2007 model
years. Its output is 360 hp @ 3200 rpm and torque is 650 ft. Lbs at 1600 rpm.

2007.5-2008 LMM Duramax Diesel (8th digit of VIN is a 6)  
The LMM specifications are nearly identical to the LBZ engine. It is a 6.6 L turbo charged engine and was introduced in the 2007.5 model
year. Its output was slightly increased (5hp and 10 ft-lb) over the LBZ to 365 hp @ 3200 rpm and 660 ft. Lbs of torque @ 1600 rpm.
